Theroux's 24th book, published in 2005, is about stand-in character Slade Steadman, whose one-book wonder "Trespassing," a how-to book on traveling the world without a passport, led to success and a severe case of writer's block. Steadman travels to Ecuador where, after becoming addicted to the hallucinogenic datura and experiencing a creative break-through, ends up blind. Theroux explores the late '90s in his book, including the Clinton presidency and scandal, as well as the notion of the Faustian bargain with a side character named "Herr Mephistos." Theroux uses the theme of blindness throughout the novel, applying it to class division, greed, ignorance and narcissism. Theroux has said that he wanted this title to be an "erotic novel."
Rumor has it that Theroux raises geese and quite enjoys book tours. His latest novel, "Burma Sahib," is a historical-fictional account of George Orwell's time as a police officer in the Indian Imperial Police during colonial Burma (Myanmar).
