Gwyneth Jones studied at a convent as a youngster, specialized in 17th century Europe during her undergrad studies, and spent time writing tv cartoon scripts before becoming a full-time writer. She also writes under the pseudonym Ann Halam, producing sci-fi series for young readers. She’s expressed admiration for the fresh, innovative takes of the “space opera” genre by fellow writers C.J. Cherryh and Frederik Pohl.
In a long, thoughtful interview with Iain Emsley for “Infinity Plus,” Jones explored her interest in sci-fi and the challenges that the genre asks of both its readers and writers, her admiration of “The Lantern-Bearers” by Rosemary Sutcliff and explored why “all good genre is about the present.” Jones frequently explores the themes of climate change and environmentalism in her writing. Her “Bold As Love” books are heavily inspired by rock and roll, with each one bearing the name of a Jimi Hendrix song or album title.
