Vreeland spoke to "To The Best of Our Knowledge" in April 2020 about this title, her fictional account of Canadian artist Emily Carr, and the healing nature of art, not just as a creator, but a viewer and witness: a very interesting interview worth the listen.

Vreeland's previous historical novels included "The Passion of Artemisia" about the Italian painter; "Luncheon of the Boating Party" about Renoir; and "Clara and Mr Tiffany" about the artist behind the famed glass lamps.

In "The Forest Lover" Vreeland constructs a history of Emily Carr, the early 20th century artist who traveled to native villages, completely contradictory to her class and gender expectations, to paint First Peoples of British Columbia, and their living landscapes. Carr believed that the landscapes, forests, and totems of Indigenous peoples could not be adequately captured through the delicacy of watercolor, commonly taught to women artists in her time. Seeking techniques better suited to the power of what she witnessed in Indigenous villages, she traveled to Europe to study modern art.
