Praised by fellow writer Richard Ford, Graham Swift released “Last Orders” in 1996, sharing that year in publication with Candance Bushnell’s “Sex and the City,” Helen Fielding’s “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” George R. R. Martin’s “A Game of Thrones,” and Chuck Palahniuk’s “Fight Club.”

Terrell L. Tebbets’ 2010 essay for “The Faulkner Journal” explores Swift’s use of Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying” as a model for “Last Orders.” Swift’s idea was to engage Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying” in an “open dialogue” through his novel. “Last Orders” won the 1996 Booker Prize, but not without some controversy, as some essayists at the time argued that Swift’s novel too closely resembled the Faulkner classic.
