Writer Elmore first found success writing westerns before transitioning to crime novels. His notable short stories include “3:10 to Yuma,” “Hombre,” “The Captives,” and “Valdez is Coming.” Many of his novels have been adapted to film, including Tarantino’s adaptation of “Rum Punch” as “Jackie Brown,” as well as popular films“Get Shorty” and “Be Cool.” Cowboy-hat-wearing Raylan Givens, introduced in “Pronto” for the first time, would later become the protagonist for the television series “Justified,” played by Timothy Olyphant. Rumor on the street is that Leonard is referred to as “the Dickens of Detroit,” a nickname based on his ability to portray realistic characters through his gritty, believable dialogue and regional colloquialisms.

In an interesting 2005 interview with Teresa Miller for “Writing Out Loud,” Elmore discussed his writing process, including the fact that he rarely ever worried about one of the more dreaded aspects of writing: how to end a novel.
