Cartoonist and writer for “This American Life” and “The New Yorker,” Kreider’s collection of essays in this title focus on the women he has known; ex-girlfriends and friends-with-benefits, past students, his cat, and even the childhood psychologist who evaluated him in what later became known as “The Strange Situation,” a foundational study in attachment theory.
In a 2018 interview with NPR, Kreider spoke about this collection of personal essays, remarking, “…I feel like writing about oneself is such an embarrassingly indulgent thing to do that you’d better justify it somehow. And in my case the rule of thumb is there had better be more in it for the reader than for you.”
Kreider works through what he calls “very naughty problems” in this funny, vulnerable, and self-examining collection, so much so that the table of contents flags three essays with an asterisk and a polite request that his mother skip them.
