Irving’s eleventh novel, which he postponed in order to rewrite in the third person, explores the trauma of childhood sexual abuse as recounted by young protagonist Jack Burns. Over the course of the novel, Jack travels through the world of tattoo parlors with his tattoo-artist mother in search of his absent father, a church organ player addicted to tattoos.

Irving has spoken bravely about his own childhood abuse and has acknowledged the autobiographical elements of the novel, noting how closely its themes align with his own experiences. As such he has written: “In this way, in increments both measurable and not, our childhood is stolen from us—not always in one momentous event but often in a series of small robberies, which add up to the same loss.” The result is a fascinating process novel from a fascinating figure.

Irving has also spoken freely of his love for Charles Dickens. Rumor has it that there are certain Dickens novels he saves for difficult times, among them “Our Mutual Friend."
