A small number of these Limited Editions were released in 2000, with this being No. 41 of a restricted run of 175 numbered and signed copies. Signed by the author across the limitation page. Book is in Near Fine condition, save for some trace shelf wear and a small touch of discoloration on the spine. Matching slipcase also in Near Fine condition save for very small touches of rubbing to outer edges, all wear very negligible. A lovely collectible, with binding and construction that matches our Grisham and Clancy limited editions.

Labeled “The Queen of Procedurals,” Cornwell released this novel in 2000, with Dr. Kay Scarpetta surviving the attack of a killer on the run known as “Le Loup-Garou,” the “Werewolf.”
Cornwell discussed her process with Lucy Nathan in a October 2024 interview, stating: “I’m writing about Scarpetta, but I don’t feel she’s there. It’s like she’s saying to me, ‘When you’re ready for me, I’ll show up, but you’re not ready for me yet.’ Then, all of a sudden, she populates the character on my screen, and the characters start becoming alive. I don’t get tired of her, even though I’ve been living with her for several decades now.”

Rumor has it that Cornwell is a huge admirer of fellow crime writer Agatha Christie. In 1993, Cornwell won the CWA Gold Dagger for “Cruel and Unusual,” an award judged in part by Agatha Christie’s daughter. Cornwell later spoke of how overwhelmed she felt by the honor.
