Published in support of the One City Trust in Edinburgh, this collection of commissioned short stories was created to help fight social exclusion in the city. Each contribution is set in Edinburgh and features a crime, resulting in a wide range of genres, from classic detective fiction to speculative horror.
Irvine Welsh, of “Trainspotting” fame, wrote the introduction, which includes the following: “In the part of Edinburgh where I grew up, a small group of people viewed criminal activity as a legitimate business. They were always very much a minority in the community: generally tolerated, occasionally indulged, but more usually frowned upon. There were a few of what authorities, back in those casually pejorative days, used to term ‘problem families’, but even the most hard-working, salt of the earth ones, like I perceived my own to be, were blessed with the odd interesting black sheep, who tended to play quite hard and fast with the property laws. As a boy, I was drawn to these characters; they told the best stories, and I was always a sucker for a good story.” A fascinating collection.
