Christopher Moore spoke to “Independent Bookstores” about the inspiration for the novel: “Actually, the inspiration came from a scene in Bulgakov’s “The Master and Margarita,” of the trial of Jesus from the point of view from Pontius Pilate, who was having a migraine at the time. A few months later I saw the PBS Frontline special called ‘From Jesus to Christ,’ and I came up with the concept for telling the ‘missing years’ of Christ’s life from the point of view of an unknown best friend. It’s funny because that’s what I do.”

Rumor has it that Christopher Moore has read all of Kurt Vonnegut’s catalogue at least twice, is a fan of writer Chuck Paluhniuk and Neal Stepehnson’s “Snow Crash,” and is unable to resist Moe’s Books in Berkeley.
