Cornwell’s storied life includes being taken in by Ruth Bell Graham, a relationship which led to Cornwell writing Graham’s autobiography, resulting in an eventually reconciled estrangement. She's worked for the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia and also written two books about her theory that the Victorian artist Walter Sickert was the serial killer Jack the Ripper. When reviewing "Point of Origin," Kirkus Reviews asked "Does Kay Scarpetta ever have a nice day?"
