Published in 1999, "False Memories" debuted during a curious year for publications that included "Battle Royale" by Koushun Takami, "Hannibal" by Thomas Harris , Frank Miller's "300," and the non-fiction "Black Hawk Down" by Mark Bowden.

In an absolutely fascinating interview by David Perell, Dean Koontz explored his love of the craft and process of writing, and the belief that a writer’s characters can have free will:

“Characters were beginning to drive the fiction for me…the characters go places you don’t anticipate…If you’re in a creative process, you’re not gonna stick to the outline…and if the characters are characters and not puppets they do start to have their own thoughts and they may surprise you…it can be quite exciting and sometimes very strange…what I learned over the years is trust the character…it’s in a way you’re talking to your subconscious I think. I am crazy but not so crazy that I think they’re real but …if you treat them like real people and let them breath they do things that I would have never contemplated and always it leads to a better novel…and the key is to always laugh with the character, otherwise that destroys everything if you laugh at them."
