De Hartog was forced to flee his native Netherlands after his resistance activities were noticed by the Nazis. His 1940s title "Captain Jan" became well known and widely read in the Netherlands during the duration of the second World War.
In 1989, the year of the title’s release, "The Antioch Review" published a review of "The Centurion," exploring how the main character "gets into dowsing and related phenomena and feels himself becoming entwined with the character of a Roman centurion of the fourth century A.D. The author skillfully moves back and forth between the present day and the year 368." The term "dosing" refers to a divination practice.
