Published in Mexico in 1989, "Like Water for Chocolate" was such a literary and financial success, it was made into the movie of the same name in 1993 with the release of the novel in the U.S. It immediately became both one of the highest grossing foreign films in U.S. history and an acclaimed international bestseller, selling over three million copies in 30 languages.

Esquivel has stated that she continues to be surprised by the staying power and impact of her novel. The novel has also been adapted for Max as a limited series staring Andrea Chaparro. It was recently turned into a ballet that premiered on March 29th 2023 at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Los Angeles and on June 22nd 2023 at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. The author is in talks for turning the novel into a musical on Broadway.
