This is President Carter's book about his early political years and "how the social and political conflicts in the South... shaped his vision of how people of good faith can join forces to right the wrongs of our society." Carter recounts his first run for the Georgia State Senate in 1962, while working as a Georgia peanut farmer and serving as chairman of the Sumter County School Board. He describes the voter fraud that occurred during that campaign, the overturning of the election following a fraud investigation, and his eventual re-election after voters in the district cast their ballots again.

As noted in a short article by Doug Richards (11Alive, September 2023): "Carter's first election was a cautionary mid-20th century tale of how one corrupt man could change an election outcome if he thought nobody was watching."
