They failed in their mission but Halberstam's chronicle of their efforts is regarded as one of the best books about the Vietnam era. With 688 pp., the book is in fine unread condition in the original shinkwrap with gold gilt cover designs and page edges, moire silk endpapers and bound-in silk bookmark. Includes the Publisher's Note and Certificate of Authenticity from Easton Press. A beautiful copy. Easton Press signed editions preserved in original shrinkwrap have become sought after collector's items.
In an insightful interview with Bob Costas on Later with Bob Costas (aired 2/19/91), David Halberstam reflects on his experience as part of a group of young journalists covering the Vietnam War. He explains how he came to believe he had a responsibility to the "field sources, captains, majors, colonels, who put their careers on the line to report that we were not winning the war." Throughout the interview, Halberstam wrestles with difficult questions, at one point telling Costas, “You’re getting some anger out of me and stirring some long-sleeping demons.”.
