Best known for The Vampire Chronicles, Anne Rice was a scholar of religion and humanistic thought. Throughout her long writing career, she explored several shifts in her own spiritual and religious beliefs, ultimately producing a series of novels focused on Christianity. These works include titles such as "Angel Time," which delves into the concept of good and evil and how it affects the trajectory of human history. Rice devoted significant time to researching for her novels, immersing herself in texts both historical and spiritual. This edition explores the works of William Blake, Sandro Botticelli, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, e. e. Cummings, Dante Alighieri, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Edgar Allan Poe, among many others. This edition of "Cherubs" is from her personal collection.
In an interview with Vulture’s Gwynne Watkins, Rice reflected on her spiritual journey and how it shaped her writing:
“I was a real uncomfortable atheist. I failed as an atheist. Because I really believed in God. But The Vampire Chronicles reflect that searching. I felt lost in the dark, cursed, cast out of the Catholic Church—not that anybody had asked me to leave—but I felt that I was in a dark world, a meaningless universe, trying to be an atheist, trying to believe everything was random… The Chronicles themselves were about the search, the refusal to accept that it’s a dark, meaningless world. And I’m still obsessed with this. I believe in God now, but I’m obsessed with: how do we live a good life?…”
