In "The PEN Ten: An interview with Annalee Newitz," Newitz explored her inspiration for writing. "Resistance is the main reason why I write. That said, I don't think there's necessarily a direct line between writing about revolution and fomenting one, nor do I think all revolutions look the same. We tend to fetishize the idea of "political uprising," as if party politics are the only correct place to start a movement. But we need radical changes everywhere: in professional organizations of romance writers, or groups of academic medievalists. You can resist oppression by reading an escapist book, by marching in the street, by voting, or by making a meal for a friend. Sometimes having fun is a form of resistance. If my writing can ease someone's pain or help them stand up to a fascist, I feel like I've done my job."

Paolo Bacigalupi has written on numerous topics, including speculative science fiction on the themes of climate disaster. In a 2010 interview with The Boston Phoenix, Bacigalupi reflected on his stories where everyday people handle disaster: "I have empathy for people who make difficult or what we might say are unethical or cruel decisions. It's not so much that people are bad, it's just that under strain, people break and our ideals break. When you build an entire world where everybody's under strain, there's something there that's very powerful to me. People doing the best they can under hard circumstances."
