Many collectors depend on limited editions as sources of authentic signatures of modern classics and from Pulitzer winning authors.
Dismissed by William Faulkner as “Mrs. Chinahand Buck” and mocked by critic Norman Holmes Pearson and other contemporaries as a lightweight, Pearl S. Buck won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932 for her novel “The Good Earth,” and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1938; the youngest woman to do so (with the youngest awarded author since being Albert Camus).
In her 1954 publication, “My Several Worlds: A Personal Record,” she recounts straddling two existences, one being a “small, white, clean Presbyterian world of my parents,” contrasted to the “big, loving merry not too clean Chinese world.” A young devotee of literature, Buck rebelled against her father’s wishes and devoured the novels of Charles Dickens and continued reading throughout her own storied life.
In her 1938 Nobel acceptance speech, Buck spoke to the creative spirit: “The creative instinct is, in its final analysis and its simplest terms, an enormous extra vitality, a super-energy, born inexplicably in an individual, a vitality great beyond all the needs of his own living – an energy which no single life can consume. This energy consumes itself then in creating more life, in the form of music, painting, writing, or whatever is its most natural medium of expression.”.
