Louis Begley was a successful lawyer who turned to writing fiction later in life. Born in Poland in 1933, he survived the Holocaust and much of his fiction parallels his real life trauma and experiences. Compared to Balzac and Louis Auchincloss by critics, he was himself a classics reader and referred to literature as his "great love" in interviews.
