Easton Press, 1999. Collector's Edition. Full Leather. As New / No Jacket as Issued. Item #5169
A handsome dark blue leather edition SIGNED by the author of this American classic. With moire silk endpapers, gold gilt cover designs and page edges, and bound-in silk bookmark. A bestseller when it was first published in 1941, this novel is considered one of the best novels ever written about Hollywood. By the author of "The Disenchanted," "The Harder They Fall," "Moving Pictures," "Sparring With Hemingway," and "On The Waterfront" based on the screenplay of the well-known film by the same name.
A controversial title when released, Schulberg faced significant criticism for his take on Hollywood with main character Sammy Glick. Schulberg was open about his dislike for Hollywood, having grown up in the industry with his mogul father, B.P. Schulberg. In an interview with "Arts Fuse" Schulber didn't hold back about what inspired his book: "As I grew up, I could see all these opportunists...lots of Sammy Glicks. Clark Gable was drunk and hit someone and killed him and it never made the papers. That was the world I came from, and I really wanted to hurt that world...My father begged me not to publish it...Hollywood moguls were outraged by it and ran me out of town...Hollywood was as much a principality as Luxembourg."
Budd Schulberg was notably disheartened by readers who expressed admiration for Sammy Glick. Schulberg intended Sammy to be a cautionary figure, embodying the ruthless and unethical pursuit of success in Hollywood. Hollywood has yet to adapt this title to film.
