The title explores the Nudd family and their yearly summer reunions where they recount "the day the pig fell in the well" based on different memories, perspectives, and "truths" about the event. In a 1976 interview with The Paris Review's Annette Grant, Cheever mused that "part of the thrill of being told a story is the chance of being hoodwinked or taken. Nabokov is a master at this. The telling of lies is a sort of sleight of hand that displays our deepest feelings about life."
