Fans of "The Sopranos," Mario Puzo's works, or "The Penguin" would appreciate this title. Condon delivers a captivating story about corrupt gangsters, politicians, financiers, and those seduced by money and power. In a 1986 interview with Herbert Mitgang of the New York Times, Condon delved into the myth of the Mafia, discussing the deceptive allure of power, money and authority. He remarked, "What's worse than a 'Manchurian Candidate'—getting inside your head and brainwashing you? Look at all the hoods who are around, making a living zotzing people to protect their rackets. They think of themselves as romantics...the trouble is, there's too cozy a relationship between organized crime and government."
Condon has a quirk-- often incorporating real names of people he knows into his stories. Many of his peripheral characters bear the names of individuals from his own life.
