Jeff VanderMeer is the celebrated author of the Southern Reach Trilogy, of which "Annihilation" won the Nebula and Shirley Jackson awards. It was later adapted to a film staring Natalie Portman. He has been crowned the "King of Weird Fiction" and has often been compared to Margaret Atwood. VanderMeer has cited the spectacular Angela Carter as an influence, telling press that "The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman" was so impactful that it "blew the back of my head off, rewired my brain." He maintains an active social media presence, often sharing his joy in the animals that visit his yard, a haven he and his writer-wife, Ann VanderMeer, have lovingly crafted as a safe refuge.
