Godwin explored themes from “The Perfectionists” in a 2020 interview with Karen Herceg: "We’re haunted from the inside, and often we may not know this for our entire lives. You can be repeating your mother’s faults or fulfilling an agenda you didn’t want. It’s like someone else is inside of you, and if you’re not aware of it you can likely die without ever knowing it.”
Godwin’s novels tackle realistic themes of alcoholism, domestic violence, creative strain, Catholicism, and sexuality-- with events often based on her own life experiences. In interviews, she’s stated that in her later life, she’s focused on works that explore “villains” more. Godwin studied at the Iowa Writer’s Workshop, where she worked with and was mentored by Kurt Vonnegut.
