Author-lawyer Lisa Scottoline found inspiration for this legal thriller in her immigrant-Italian grandparents. In a 2004 interview with Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air, she revealed that her grandparents were classified as "enemy aliens" during World War II, which subjected them to FBI raids and various restrictions via Roosevelt’s “Proclamation Number 2527— which followed Proclamation #2525 for Japanese residents and Proclamation #2526 for German residents in the United States. Scottoline has stated that she was “born to write” this story. During her book tour, numerous individuals approached Lisa Scottoline with their own family registration papers—often historical artifacts passed down through generations. Many had not recognized the significance of these documents until they saw the photos of Scottoline’s own grandparents’ paperwork included in her book. She is the author of over 15 legal crime thrillers and many more titles.
