In "The Spectator World" Welsh stated "It would be very difficult, with the homogenization of culture, to publish a book like 'Trainspotting' now. I don't know if it would get published."
Welsh has also written stage plays, a musical, screenplays and has directed several short and feature length films. His novels "share characters" and his approach to Scottish dialect bucks tradition as he writes his dialogue phonetically. The 1996 film based on the novel became a sensation upon release.
