A beautiful Limited Numbered First Edition signed by John Updike. Numbered 46 of 250 Limited Edition copies. Subtitled: "Upon Receiving The Swingers Life Club Membership Solicitation." Oblong 4to. Dark red cloth in fine unread condition.
An exceptionally printed and bound book. Protected in a removable mylar cover.
Known for his controversial portrayals of sex and gender dynamics, this edition is no exception to Updike's explicit style.Katie Roiphe provides an interesting approach to Updike in her 2012 article, where she states, "From the beginning, Updike wrote about trying to defeat death or mortality through affairs, through the intensity of sex...This sense of sex, or the creation of many lives, through affairs, and mistresses, transcending the limits of one small suburban existence through sex, runs through Updike's writing from the beginning." Others have differing opinions, including Harold Bloom who suggested Updike was a "minor novelist with a major style" and David Foster Wallace, who suggested Updike was "just a penis with a thesaurus."
