A lovely First Edition, later printing of this popular book signed by the author on the front free endpaper. In burgundy and teal cloth & boards, the book is in near fine condition with light toning/soil to the page edges; otherwise very nice. The near fine dustjacket is complete with only natural toning to the white panels. A nice copy.

Author Allan Gurganus tells the story of a ninety-nine year old Lucy Marsden, married to a Civil War veteran at fourteen, and outlines a lengthy, storied life. When the book came out, "Le Monde" called Gurganus "a Mark Twain for our age, hilariously clear-eyed, blessed with perfect pitch." Donald Antrim from BOMB (1997) referred to novel as a “magnificent and encyclopedic work of comic, familial, southern storytelling history.” The 700+ page novel was set to stage and its run lasted for one night only. Reviewer David Finckle called it “a gargantuan challenge to anyone wanting to adapt it to another medium.” In “The Searing: On the Fiction of Allan Gurganus” (2013), William Giraldi states that the novel “has the heft and historical reach to slide into the same shelf as ‘War and Peace.’” Gurganus was mentored by writer John Cheever and was identified as a talent early. Of his own writing style, Gurganus says, “My own work’s preferred ingredients are: History, Death, Humor. Sex.”.
