Peter Carey was winner of the Booker Prize for 2001 for the "True History of the Kelly Gang." His other works include "Oscar and Lucinda," for which Carey won the Booker Prize in 1988. Titles "Jack Maggs," "The Unusual Life of Tristan Smith," "Bliss," "Illywhacker," and "The Fat Man in History" all followed with critical acclaim. A handsome copy by an important modern Australian author.
In a 1988 interview with Ray Willbanks, Carey spoke of writing "The Tax Inspector" as a revelation not of his dark side, but that of humanity. He insists that readers are sometimes asked to take a “scary, sometimes frightening journey” through stories in order to come out the other side to empathy, and even humor. “The book is, I believe, hopefully and compassionately imagined,” he says.
Peter Carey’s novels often feature an unsparing view of the impact of child abuse in communities and the damage caused by colonialism, something he’s garnered controversy for throughout his career. Fans of True Detective or Mike Flanagan’s Haunting Anthology would enjoy this title. In collectible condition.
