In a 2012 interview with LIGHTSPEED magazine, Chabon discuses his love of John Carter books, Frank Frazetta beauties, and his childhood love of pulp Science Fiction, going so far as to sign his name "Mike Burroughs Chabon" as a young boy (after Edgar Rice Burroughs). He states, "...they were the kind of books that I loved to read...I discovered Burroughs and then Arthur Conan Doyle...those were kind of my first two crushes."
