This beautiful dark blue leather First Edition is SIGNED by the author, Susan Sontag, winner of the National Book Award for Fiction for 2000 for "In America." This is a true first edition and is in fine unread condition. Book contains an introduction by Sontag not found in other editions. Susan Sontag's other credits include "Women" with photos by Annie Leibovitz, "The Way We Live Now" with the art of Howard Hodgkin, and many essays. She has been called one of the pre-eminent critics writing in America. A significant author.

In "Against Interpretation" (1966) Sontag argued that when interpreting art, readers should "recover our senses...to see more, to hear more, to feel more." In "The Volcano Lover," Sontag interprets the history of Sir William Hamilton, his wife Emma Hamilton, her lover Lord Nelson, and Emma's spiral into poverty. Heralded by Vanity Fair as a "glamorous intellectual" Sontag described the process of writing the novel as "a delirium of pleasure." Sontag has stated that a hand-painted engraving of an erupting Mount Vesuvius, seen in a small British shop in the 80s, inspired the story's sublime elements, with themes borrowed from 18th century Romanticism.

Fans of "The White Lotus" and those who follow Michiko Kakutani's recommendations would enjoy this title.
