Referred to as "one of the greats of post-World-War Two San Francisco poets and musicians" by famous Beatnik legend Lawrence Ferlinghetti, David Meltzer wrote more than 50 books. He was the lead singer of the psychedelic group "The Serpent Power," whose 1967 record was listed as a top 40 album of the "Summer of Love" by Rolling Stone magazine.

This edition is published by Black Sparrow Press, a small print founded in LA in 1966 by John and Barbara Martin. Until its end in 2002, the imprint published high quality, collectible editions by Charles Bukowski, "unofficial poet laureate of LA" Wanda Coleman, Charles Reznikoff, and Diane Wakoski among others. It was initially founded in order to publish Bukowski's often controversial works, along with poems and prose by other writers considered avant-garde or transgressive. In March 2020, Black Sparrow Press relaunched its publication services.
