Originally published in 1996, this is the memoir of McCourt's miserable childhood in Ireland that won the 1997 National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Biography for its humor and poignancy.

In a 1996 Fresh Air interview, the writer McCourt had the following to say about writing: "For some reason, I had a responsibility to my family and the people who lived around me...I felt that I had to convey their dignity -- the way they dealt with adversity and poverty -- and their good humor."

Frank McCourt explained the significance of the title "Angela's Ashes" in connection to his subsequent novel, "Tis." Originally conceived as a single work, the two books were published as distinct editions. The concluding word of "Angela's Ashes," is "tis," and the novel "Tis" concludes with the poignant act of scattering Angela's ashes.
