A beautiful First Edition children's book signed by master children's illustrator Maurice Sendak, and author and award-winning playwright Tony Kushner on the verso of the front free endpaper. All illustrated by wonderful Sendak illustrations. In dark brown cloth and a complete colorful dustjacket, this is a beautiful copy with rare signatures. 56 pp. In the dustjacket summary, "Befriended by three intelligent talking animals and three hundred helpful schoolkids, brother and sister sing for the money, buy the milk, defeat the bully, and triumphantly return home." This opera was performed 55 times by the children of Terezin, the Nazi Concentration Camp. The talking cat in the opera story was played by Ela Weissberger who survived the camp.
