A beautiful First Edition (so stated), First Printing signed for Parrish Books by Maurice Sendak at his home in Connecticut. Signed on the half-title page. The first English translation of German author, Heinrich Von Kleist. This is a dramatic play telling the story of an army of Amazons who set to conquer Greek heroes to restock their female offspring (?); they blast into the midst of the Trojan war. Penthesilea is queen of the Amazons and it is she who is hunting Achilles in a "tragedy of love in a world governed by the rules of war." In a fine binding with maroon cloth and imbedded black and gold spine label. Mr. Sendak left a small ink mark near his signature; otherwise fine. In a fine colorful dustjacket. 159 pp. Beautiful Sendak illustrations. Very scarce signed by Sendak.
