Way and Williams, Chicago, 1897. First Edition, . Binding: Decorative Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good+. Jacket Condition: No Jacket. Size: 4to - over 9.75" - 12" tall. A magnificent copy of L. FRANK BAUM'S first children's book AND the first book by famous illustrator, MAXFIELD PARRISH. The last story in the book introduces a little girl by the name of Dorothy who, unbeknownst to her and perhaps her creator, had an exciting future ahead of her with the Wizard of Oz and Toto. In excellent condition for a book this age: the cover and binding are original ; 12 full page illustrations by Maxfield Parrish are all present; 265 pages of text are all present; the endpapers appear to be replaced relatively recently; cover shows some soiling and some light foxing and smudging is scattered throughout the book; 10 of the illustrations appear to have had their corners turned down at one point but only one affects the illustration itself--all corners are present and untorn; the book edges show what appears to be natural browning from age; two of the pages have a small tear of less than 1" but none affect the text or the illustrations; otherwise the inside is clean and bright; and the overall book appearance is extremely solid. Printed by R.R. Donnelly & Sons' Lakeside Press for Way and Williams, publishers. An extremely handsome copy. No discounts.
